Tony was born with music in his blood. In his teens he worked as a technician for a DJ in the UK, setting up PA and lighting equipment for bands and the DJ. He also worked for the BBC in the role of technician in film and sound. After his arrival in Australia in 1981, Tony worked self employed and with Samualsons Film Services, repairing and maintaining equipment for the film industry. Tony has been repairing Saxophones since 1996. He also is an Electrical Lecturer and Technician in TAFE, a position he has held for the past 27 years. Tony picked up the tenor sax in 1989 and became interested in the soprano sax a few years later however, the tenor is the instrument of his choice. Keenly aware that postural awareness is an essential part of musicianship, Tony began practicing the Alexander Technique in 1999. He continues to follow this technique and encourages his students to use good posture. To enhance his knowledge and passion for the saxophone, Tony undertook a Certificate IV in Jazz with the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts, graduating in 2013 Tony Stanley has experience performing in bands (Malembe, Tierra, Marissa Leoni Trio, to name a few) and has enjoyed playing at several festivals, including the Festival of Perth and the Fremantle Festival. He has also participated and enjoyed choir singing over the years. Improvisation has been a regular feature of his performances and part of his practice routine using backing tracks. Tony is also a street performer and you can see him often playing in the streets of Fremantle on weekends.
